GORILLA TREKKING

Gorilla trekking is the top tourist in Uganda and East Africa at large. Gorilla trekking takes place in countries like Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla national Park), Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Biega National park), Angola (Cabinda enclave), Cameroon (Lobéké National Park or Takamanda National Park), Central African Republic (Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve), Equatorial Guinea (Monte Alén National Park), in Gabon, the best place to find gorillas is Loango National Park, Republic of Congo (Odzala-Kokoua National Park), In Nigeria, gorillas are found in Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, Mbe Mountains, and the Okwangwo division of Cross River National Park.

Gorilla trekking is one of the life time events which everybody yearns to enjoy however, it requires adequate preparation and it’s done in phases:

Phase 1: Before Gorilla Trekking

Before Gorilla trekking, a tourist must be ready to prepare physically. Remember, gorilla trekking is physically demanding and an average level of fitness is required. Do some exercise, be fit for the challenge because gorilla trekking involves walking in the forests, hiking the hills and ascending the valleys, crossing rivers.

Tourist must prepare mentally how to Manuaver in the challenging environment. Gorilla trekking habitats are experienced with challenging terrain and prepare to enjoy the experience.

Prepare proper gorilla trekking gear – proper gorilla trekking gear include water proof hiking shoes, long sleeved clothes, hut, sun glasses, rain jacket, warm clothes and so on. There are more other things to carry like snacks, bottled mineral water for refreshment, walking stick and so on.

Gorilla trekking briefing –   pre- trek briefing by the park rangers. At many stations, briefing starts at 7:30am and last for 30 minutes thus actual trekking starts at 8am.

Phase 2: During Gorilla Trekking

During gorilla trekking, all trekkers must keep their ears open to the guidelines of the ranger guides. Listen carefully and respond accordingly. The aim of gorilla trekking is to protect gorillas and their natural habitat.

On meeting with gorillas, maintain a safe distance. UWA recommends 7 meters between you and gorillas to prevent the spread of diseases.

Avoid flash photography which scares gorillas. Flashy photography may make gorillas turn violent to trekkers. If trekkers scare gorillas the end result will be dangerous.

When you are near the gorillas, ensure to keep in groups. If you scatter, the gorillas will charge thinking you have come to attack them.

Observe and study about gorilla behaviours. Learn to appreciate gorilla behaviours. Try to compare gorillas with other primates like chimpanzees, bonobos, baboons, golden monkeys among others.

Enjoy the experience – take photos and videos for remembrance and for business purposes.

Phase 3: After Gorilla Trekking

Combine gorilla trekking with other activities like birding, swimming, boat trips, community tour among others.

Relax and reflect – you can relax by the lake and enjoy a boat cruise.

Support local communities -visit different local communities to support local them in terms scholastic materials, buy locally made art and craft, buy local food among others.
