Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park is one of the savanna parks in Uganda. Semuliki game reserve was created in 1932 and upgraded to National Park Status in 1993. It is the only tract of true lowland tropical forest in East Africa, protecting 441 recorded bird species and 53 mammals. Large areas of this low-lying park may flood during the wet season, a brief reminder of the time when the entire valley lay at the bottom of a lake for seven million years.

Semuliki National Park is located at the border of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Semuliki National Park is Located in the Kabarole district in Toro sub-region, Semuliki National Park is found on the floor of the Albertine rift valley.

Semuliki National Park hosts a variety of attractions but the following are the major one:

Sempaya Hot spring – It’s one of the major tourist attractions in Semuliki National Park. The hot spring consist of boiling water suitable for experiments like boiling eggs and bananas among others. The park has  female and male hot springs with a unique outlook that puts a smile on people’s faces leaving them with an unforgettable experience and they have a great cultural background attached to them.

Bird species – a variety of bird species found in Semuliki National Park. You can go birding in the park to look for migrant and indigenous birds. The bird watching in Semuliki National park is done from Sempaya to Ntandi around the roadside up to Kurumia trail. Some of the bird species you can see on your birding trip to Semuliki national park are; the White-throated Blue Swallow, Black Dwarf Hornbill, Great blue and Ross’s Turacos, Maxwell’s Black Weaver, Black-casqued Wattled Horbill, Red-rumped Tinkerbird, the African Piculet, Yellow-throated Nicator, Leaf-love, the Swamp Palm Bulbul, the Crested Malimbe, also the Red-bellied Malimbe, Blue-billed malimbe, Lemon-bellied Crombec and among others.

Fauna – Semuliki National park has 305 tree species and 125 species are found here. Therefore, its the best option for plant lovers and a lot to be seen during the game drive.

Semuliki mammals – Over 63 mammal species, including Uganda Kops, forest buffaloes, Leopards, hippos, warthogs, water bucks, bush bucks, mona monkeys, water chevrotains, bush babies, bush pigs civets, elephants, and the beecroft’s flying squirrel, target rat, piggy squirrel, little collared fruit bat, and water chevrotain among others.

Primates in Semuliki National Park – Once you visit Semuliki National park, expect to encounter red-tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys, Grey checked Mangabey, black Mongabey, black and white monkeys, red Colobus monkeys, baboons, and unique chimpanzees among others. Semuliki is a perfect place for primate lovers.

The Batwa people- These are the original inhabitant of Semuliki and are divided into four ethnic groups: Bakonjo, Bwamba, Batwa and Batuku. Each of the mentioned ethnic group is entitled to different activities like the Batwa who are the traditional hunters, Bakonjo, the keepers of mountain Rwenzori, Batuku are cattle keepers and Bwamba the farmers and stays in the lowlands of mountain Rwenzori.

Mountain Rwenzori ranges – the mountain of the moon are among the highest peaks in Uganda. The ranges acts as the feeding ground for primates, birds and other mammals. Primates like red -tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys among others can be sighted.
